Kepong, Kuala Lumpur -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/16/2015 -- A cream used for the treatment of skin problem eczema in kids doesn't seem to boost the threat of cancer, based on research financed by the cream's manufacturer.

Scientists looked at almost 7,500 kids within the United States who have been provided on average 793 grams of pimecrolimus cream for the treatment of eczema, and were surveyed for a decade.

By May 2014, 5 cases of cancer were identified among the kids: two lymphomas, two leukemias and one case of bone cancer. But, there have been no cases of skin cancer, the researchers said. On the basis of the findings, "it looks doubtful" that pimecrolimus cream as utilized in the research for the treatment of eczema is related to an increased cancer risk, according to lead researchers from Pennsylvania University in Philadelphia concluded.

The research was published online February 18 within the Journal "JAMA Dermatology" and was financed by Montreal-based Valeant Pharmaceuticals International.

Eczema that is common in kids, causes skin to become inflamed, dry and often extremely itchy. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved pimecrolimus in 2001 for the treatment of eczema among kids who're at least 24 months younger. The product carries warning concerning potential risk of skin cancer. This research can hopefully help to improve the treatment of eczema, countering the issues raised by FDA warnings.

The results "must reduce the pharmacist and physician issues which have limited the use of these relevant atopic substitutes to corticosteroids. The short-term results will bring relief to a bigger section of the numerous young children with eczema," concluded the researchers of Oregon Health and Science University.
