Dr. Timm Recommends Porcelain Crowns for Patients

Oakdale, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/28/2015 -- Individuals suffering from tooth decay, broken fillings, gaps between teeth, and other dental ailments are often not completely aware of how porcelain crowns can help them. Dr. Richard Timm of All Family Dental understands the benefits brought about by this particular type of restoration. Not only are porcelain crowns very durable, they are also designed to look just like natural teeth.

Dental crowns are needed when teeth begin to chip or wear down, usually as a result of factors such as bruxism (teeth grinding), a misaligned bite, fracture, or decay. A tooth that has had a large filling or a root canal may also weaken due to lack of support.

To prevent teeth from eventually fracturing into pieces, it may often be necessary to restore it with a crown electively. Crowns add strength and stability to weakened teeth by covering and shielding the entire surface of the afflicted area. Dr. Timm makes use of porcelain, which he believes to be the best possible cosmetic material for dental crowns. "Porcelain crowns look and feel just like your own teeth. They restore normal functionality and allow you to have a normal bite," he explains.

When receiving a lab-generated crown, patients may generally expect the process to take at least two dental appointments. However, with CEREC technology available in the office, Dr. Timm can produce a crown in just one visit. A thin layer of tooth will be shaved off to allow the bonding to take place so that the crown can be placed perfectly.

"There are three types of crowns: porcelain, gold, and metal—ceramic. Porcelain crowns create, in essence, an appearance completely identical to the patient's original teeth. They capture and reflect light just like natural teeth," says Dr. Timm.

With good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing and flossing regularly, porcelain crowns are expected to last between ten to twenty years.
