Disability Doesn't Have to Curb Freedom, Says WWVS

Ivybridge, Devon -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/04/2015 -- The team at WWVS has been impressed and inspired by the story of former Royal Marine Andy Grant, shared in his local paper, the Liverpool Echo. Despite losing a limb after being caught in a bomb blast while on duty in Afghanistan, Andy was keen to continue to live a full and active lifestyle.

Andy joined the Marine Commandos aged 17 and had previously served in Iraq. In 2009 accidental tripwire activation saw Andy lose a chunk out of his thigh, severing the femoral artery and leading to 30 operations. However the nerve damage could not be repaired and Andy realised that a prosthetic limb would give him more mobility than his by then useless leg.

Since then, Andy has made a point living life to the full, including falling in love and starting a family and taking part in a number of sports including surfing, skiing, triathlon competitions and sky diving. At last year's Invictus Games he won gold medals for the 400 and 1,500 metre events and a bronze in the 4x100m relay, and is now in training for the 2016 Paralympics. An attempt to row the Atlantic Ocean as part of a four man team of amputees is also on the cards for December and Andy has embarked upon a career as a motivational speaker.

Andy has recently acquired a specially adapted car through the Motability charity, an automatic Vauxhall Astra with a left foot accelerator to help him keep up with his many projects.

While sporting glory may be out of reach for many, disability clearly need not mean an end to freedom. Take a look at the used WAVS for sale at WWVS, providing access to driving for wheelchair users and those suffering from other forms of disability.
