Study Showed That Combining Two Pain Relievers Can Result in Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Orlando, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/03/2015 -- Pain is one of the major reasons why arthritis patients suffer, and this is why many of them use pain relievers just to improve their condition. There are even those who use multiple pain relievers to achieve more pain relief. However, it seems that doing it is not a good idea.

A study showed that combining two pain relievers can result in gastrointestinal bleeding. Over-the-counter drugs used for arthritis that are associated with side effects can provide worse results when used together.

The Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases published a British study that focused on determining the effects of a pill with a combination of acetaminophen and ibuprofen and of the two drugs separately. It was found that the combination pill provided more pain relief, but a higher risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. It was also found that acetaminophen can cause GI bleeding at very high doses.

Terry L. Moore, M.D., director of the division of rheumatology at Saint Louis University Medical Center, stated that the study pointed out the potential complications of using over-the-counter drugs without knowing the side effects or exact dosages.

A study was conducted and it involved 900 patients within the 40 to 84 years of age bracket. The patients, who suffered from knee osteoarthritis, were split into four groups. One group was given 400 milligrams of ibuprofen, the second got 1,000 milligrams of acetaminophen, the third got a combination of 500 mg of acetaminophen and 200 mg of ibuprofen and the fourth received a combination of 1,000mg of acetaminophen and 400mg of ibuprofen.

It was found that after three months, the group that took the high dose combination pill achieved significant improvements in stiffness, pain relief, function and overall quality of life. However, 38.4 percent of the subjects also experienced a drop of 24.1 in their hemoglobin levels, which can be a sign of gastrointestinal bleeding.

Using pain relief drugs is one of the most common solutions used by arthritis patients to achieve pain relief. However, pain relief drug use is also associated with the development of side effects. Using two or more pain relief drugs can be dangerous, especially if it is done without the permission of a doctor.

There are many patients nowadays who use natural alternatives such as curcumin supplements to achieve pain relief. Curcumin is popularized by its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and is known to be extremely helpful to sufferers who want to achieve pain relief and improved mobility (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
