Restore Together 2014 Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast to End Poverty and Oppression

Largo, MD -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/10/2014 -- There is an all-out assault on the poor. And that assault is global, systemic, digital, immoral, and effective. These factors and many others conjoin to make these very trying, desperate, and difficult times for the former middle class and the poor – and especially the growing numbers of urban poor of all ethnic and racial groups. But there is now an accessible and digital on-line community in restoretogether.com that allows extensive organizing and resource collaboration toward rapid and comprehensive solutions for those in crisis or in multi-dimensional need.

On January 18, 2014, from 8 am to 11:30 am at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel at 1401 Pennsylvania Ave. NW in Washington, DC, where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. finished his “I Have a Dream Speech” in 1963, Restore Together will have its annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Breakfast to help end poverty and oppression. All are welcome. Performing at this year's Breakfast will be Traces of Blue, formerly Afro Blue of "The Sing Off on NBC," and the jazz psalmist and Stellar Award-nominated Todd Ledbetter. The 2014 panelists and honorees include Joshua DuBois (former White House head of Faith- Based Initiatives), Dorothy Gilliam (legendary Washington Post journalist), Congressman Elijah Cummings (U.S. Representative for Maryland's 7th congressional district), Rev. Dr. Ronald and Rev. Dr. Marie Braxton (Pastor & Assistant Pastor, historic Metropolitan AME Church, Washington, DC), Rev. Dr. David McAllister-Wilson (President, Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, DC), Rev. Dr. William B. McClain (Mary Elizabeth Joyce Professor Emeritus of Preaching and Worship, Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC), Rev. Brenda Girton-Mitchell (Center for Faith-Based Partnerships, US Department of Education), the Friend’s Community School of College Park, MD, and the Why We Can’t Wait, Washington DC church-wide Initiative to address the current state of mass incarceration. The net proceeds are used to end poverty and oppression globally. Tickets for the event are available at www.restoretogether.com.

Rev. Dr. William B. McClain, who worked closely with Dr. King during the civil rights movement, stated, “Restore Together is the 21st century extension of the Poor People’s Campaign of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and I am convinced if this technology of restoretogether.com had been available in the 20th century, Martin would have made great use of it to help those in need and to bring his message out to a wider world!”

Joshua DuBois, former Executive Director of the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships, Founder and CEO of Values Partnerships, Columnist for The Daily Beast and Author of THE PRESIDENT’S DEVOTIONAL: The Daily Readings That Inspired President Obama, stated, “Restore Together is a digital platform that facilitates the needed collaboration, and I’m grateful for them catalyzing a conversation about poverty and opportunity. I am indeed honored and look forward to participating at this year’s Breakfast.”

This year's panelists will discuss questions such as: How would Dr. King address the issues associated with domestic and global poverty in the 21st century? What would Dr. King say about the prison-industrial complex or mass incarceration in the 21st century? What role might social media, collaboration or technology play in eradicating poverty and oppression through global urbanization during the 21st century?

According to Rev. Dr. Louis J. Hutchinson, III, Chairman and Founder of Restore Together, Inc., “The sacrificial solution that will heal institutional sin such as oppression and poverty is at the very foundation of our existence: LOVE.” “Restoretogether.com is love in real-time action, seeking to preserve global community, for all.”

At last year's 2013 Breakfast, Congressman John Lewis stated, “We have miles to go; we are not there yet, but we are on our way. There will be no turning back, for it does not matter if we are Black or White, Latino, Asian American or Native American. We are one people, we are one family, we are one house, and we must Restore Together!”
