Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/13/2014 -- We expect to see steady growth across most key industry indicators for this fledgling tourism market in the coming years. BMI predicts a growth in inbound and outbound tourism as well as tourism receipts, though the hotel and restaurant industry is likely to display more volatility in the period up until 2018. Despite some reservations concerning infrastructure and a bloated bureaucracy, we believe this market has some great opportunities for expansion.

Romania is almost completely dependent on European countries as its tourism industry's source markets. In the coming years, if predictions of a sustained period of European economic growth hold true, this will lead to a healthy growth in visitor numbers to Romania, around 5% per year until 2018. Naturally, this dependence on Europe for visitors also poses a risk of overexposure to a downturn in the economies of Europe.

Provided that this does not happen we expect arrivals to grow from 8.6mn in 2014 to around 10.6mn in 2018, which will have positive effects on both the number of hotels in the country and the value of tourism receipts. Outbound tourism will also see growth over the forecast period, but this will be more modest as Romanian wages will remain relatively low for the region, whilst this is attractive for investors it dampens the gains from domestic and outbound tourism in the country.

Tourists coming to Romania mostly arrive by plane, and there are a number of government and EU-funded projects underway at present to increase air travel capacity. We expect the dominance of air travel to continue due to the poor condition of Romania's post-Soviet road and rail systems which are in dire need of rehabilitation, some of which is beginning to happen now through EU structural funding. Ultimately, the poor quality of land infrastructure is acting as a brake on visitor numbers from continental Europe, especially neighbouring countries.

There are several stand-out areas for investment in Romania...
