Maidstone, Kent -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/02/2012 -- This week, over 100 Conservative MPs have questioned the amount of money being spent on wind energy, considering the current financial situation. The MPs urged the prime minister to cut subsidies for wind turbines, and also to change planning rules, to make objecting to their construction easier. Damian Croft, Managing Director of eco-friendly sales and marketing company DCM Marketing Services commented: “The facts speak for themselves when it comes to renewable energy. The benefits have been proven time and time again.”
The government is aiming for 15% of the UK’s energy supply to be provided by renewable sources, including wind, by 2015, and said that although renewable energy is “currently more costly” than using fossil fuels, wind farms are a “cost-effective and valuable part of the UK’s diverse energy mix.”
The MPs expressed their concerns in a letter, written to the prime minister, in which they stated, “In these financially straitened times, we think it is unwise to make consumers pay, through taxpayer subsidy, for inefficient and intermittent energy production that typifies onshore wind turbines.”
Labour shadow energy and climate change secretary Caroline Flint hit back saying: “Britain should be a world leader in wind energy. We need to put jobs, growth and reducing energy bills first.” She added, “If Tory MPs want to turn the clock back on renewable energy, it will be the public who pay the price through higher energy bills, as we become more reliant on volatile fossil fuel prices.” Damian Croft from DCM Marketing Services supported this position, adding, “Fossil fuel prices are only going to increase, at a rapid rate. We can ignore the problem now, in favour of a little cost, but it will cost us a lot more in the long run.”
