Side Effects of Enalapril on Dogs

Hialeah Gardens, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/15/2014 -- Enalapril is a drug that is used dogs and cat that are suffering from minor to severe heart failure. It is one of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors that prevent the production of angiotensin which increases blood pressure by making small blood vessels narrow. By keeping the blood pressure low, the weakened and damaged heart does not have to exert itself as much. This also increases the amount of blood coming to the kidney and is used in cats and dogs with kidney disease. It also appears to lower the amount of protein that leaves through the urine when the kidneys are unable to retain it.

Enalapril is commonly used with other heart medications, such as beta-blockers which maintain a normal rhythm and diuretics that remove excess fluid from the heart and lungs. The drug leaves the body through the kidneys, so animals with kidney disease may have a hard time clearing it.

Animals taking enalapril will need to have their blood pressure taken and blood drawn to check kidney values on a regular basis. Commons side effects are decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness and a rash. Sometimes enalapril can end up decreasing the kidneys’ blood supply, making kidney failure worse
