Miami, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/27/2015 -- Dr. Frank McCormick, a LESS Institute orthopedic surgeon, Harvard Medical School professor, and Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy Reserve, recently presented at the International Cartilage Repair Society's annual meeting in Chicago, Illinois.

During this presentation, Dr. McCormick revealed the results of his study, which showed that a meniscal allograft transplant – a type of procedure that replaces the torn or damaged meniscus – shows little to no rate of requiring additional surgeries.

90 days after the procedure, Dr. McCormick noted that 0% of patients returned for revision transplantation.

"The key take-home point to our study is that following meniscal allograft transplantation using our national assessment we had a 90-day return to OR rate of zero," Dr. McCormick says. "However, one in five patients required some kind of concomitant surgery within the 2-year period."

The study was conducted by Dr. McCormick and his colleagues, who performed a database search and retrospective review of over 550,000 patients with meniscal pathology (knee pain).

During the study, Dr. McCormick also noted that only one in five patients needed some kind of concomitant surgery within a two-year period. One year after surgery, the rate of revision transplantation was below five percent.
