Sulfamethoxazole Trimethoprim Side Effects in Dogs

Hialeah Gardens, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/07/2014 -- Trimethoprim is an antibiotic that is combined with a sulfonamide (trimethoprim sulfa) such as sulfadiazine and sulfamethoxazole, to increase its effectiveness. It kills bacteria by binding to the enzyme that allows them to make folic acid which is required to make both DNA and proteins. It targets most bacteria that infect the urinary tract, except for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylcoccus spp., E. coli, Klebsiella pneumonia and Proteus mirabilis.

Dogs and cats with bacterial infections of the urinary tract, respiratory tract, middle ear, prostate and skin and those infected by the parasite Coccidia spp. are prescribed trimethoprim. Horses with respiratory, uterine and urinary tract infections and with abscesses are treated with trimethoprim.

There are many side effects of trimethoprim sulfa and they include severe allergic reactions that can be life-threatening, blood disorders such as anemia, gastrointestinal upset, kidney failures, urinary crystals, elevated sodium and potassium, neurologic problems, muscle pain and breathing difficulties.
