West Hollywood, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/10/2014 -- John Foster, MD said patients do not need an appointment to receive their flu shots. Flu shots are available during normal clinic hours Monday through Saturday and are covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare Part B.

The CDC recommends a yearly flu shot for everyone 6 months of age and older. There are different flu viruses; however, the 2014/15 seasonal flu vaccine is designed to protect against the main flu viruses that research suggests will cause the most illness during the current flu season. “Again we remind our neighbors to make it your business to avoid getting the flu and spreading it to family, co-workers and others by getting their flu shots now” said Dr. Foster. The timing of the flu is unpredictable and can vary year to year. However, seasonal flu activity usually peaks in January or February, but it can occur as early as October and as late as May.

“We have been giving flu vaccines to residents of West Hollywood since late August”, says Dr. Foster. He noted that the calls for flu shots have increased since the first October. October is a very good month to get vaccines for the whole family to ensure they are protected before flu season begins.

Flu vaccines are designed to protect against the main flu viruses that research suggests will be the most common during the upcoming season. Three kinds of flu viruses commonly circulate among people today: Influenza A (H1N1) viruses, influenza A (H3N2) viruses, and influenza B viruses. Vaccines that give protection against three viruses are called trivalent vaccines. Dr. Foster recommends the trivalent vaccine.

If you do get sick, there are drugs that can treat flu illness. They are called antiviral drugs and they can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. They also can prevent serious flu-related complications, like pneumonia.
