Survey Says Numerous Americans Aren't Given Preventive Oral Care

Brea, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/21/2014 -- Survey shows that a lot of Americans are not given preventive dental care among ethnic and racial groups as published in the journal of the Frontier in Public Health on December 17, 2013. This indicates the possibility of increased dental problems across America.

The study conducted made use of telephone survey with a high number of participants. 644,635 middle-aged adults were surveyed and found out that there is an increase of preventive dental care between the year 1999 and 2008 as sourced in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance.

However, there is a major discrepancy between the said years. 23–43 percent of the participants were not able to obtain preventive dental procedures in the year 2008. The ethnicity differs from ethnicity. It was found out that 57 percent of the Black Americans were not able to receive medical care. This is far different from the 77 percent of Asian Americans who were not able to gain access to preventive dental care. The data also show that 76 percent of whites and 62 percent of Native Americans and Hispanics lacked the mentioned oral care procedure.

The survey conducted provided an efficient approximate of the frequency of preventive oral care in different ethnic groups across the United States. It also suggests more campaign awareness about the importance of dental health by means of educating the middle-aged group to see the impact of dental health to the quality of life.

The reasons behind the lack of dental care rooted from several lifestyle factors. Income and health insurance are some of the primary reasons why people opt to not get checked or treated. This is seen among all the races except in Black Americans.

The need for oral health care is important as everyone is susceptible to any dental problems. For children to adult, a different case of dental concern appears over time. This alarms more dental professionals to find more ways in providing treatments for different cases.
