The Eucalyptus Restaurant in Israel Returns to Defend Title at 17th Annual CousCous Fest

CousCous Fest is an annual competition in Italy held as part of the International Festival of Cultural Integration, and last year’s winner Ronny Basson will return to defend his win.

Jerusalem, IL -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/27/2014 -- Couscous is a traditional Berber dish with North African origins that has since been popularized throughout the Middle East and eventually throughout the whole world. The dish can be made with such infinite variety that every year, Italy hosts the annual CousCous Fest to allow nations from all over the world to compete to create the best CousCous. Last year, Israel was the winner, and the representatives for the nation were chosen from the popular Eucayptus Restaurant in the Artists Colony, Jerusalem.

Ronny Basson, son of The Eucalyptus’ head chef Moshe Basson and manager of the Eucalyptus Restaurant, outperformed chefs from 8 other participating nations, including Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Italy, Morocco, Palestine, Senegal, Tunisia and, for the first time in the history of the event, the United States of America.

The winning recipe included chickpeas mashed with butter lavender and red snapper covered with a creamy smoked eggplant and sprinkled with coconut sauce and lemon grass. The Couscous is still being served at The Eucalyptus Restaurant as part of their distinct and historically vibrant Eretz Yisraeli menu.

A spokesperson for The Eucalyptus Restaurant explained, “Moshe has always been extremely proud of Ronny, but never more so than when he won the CousCous championship at the festival last year. As well as having a keen mind for business managing the restaurant, Ronny demonstrated his own culinary flair and made Israel proud. The Eucalyptus Restaurant in Jerusalem has become famous for its traditional kosher menu and this kosher couscous was praised not only for its universal appeal but for the originality of its composition and preparation, representing in a nutshell what the Eucalyptus philosophy is all about.”

About The Eucalyptus Restaurant
The Eucalyptus restaurant first opened its doors in 1986, in the Talpiot neighborhood of Jerusalem. Chef Moshe Basson, utilizing his schooling in agriculture and passion for studying ancient script, had incorporated into the restaurants kosher menu many dishes that are based on foods eaten for many centuries in this region. In its newest location, overlooking the magnificent Teddy fountain and a stone’s throw away from the David citadel and the old city, diners can discover all facets of Israeli cuisine, ancient and modern.
