TraceGains Explores Implications of Colorado Prop 105 to Mandate GMO Labeling

Westminster, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/11/2014 -- Jennifer Brusco, TraceGains’ Director of Media and Content, reported in the company’s blog that Colorado's Proposition 105 was approved for the 2014 statewide ballot in November. If passed, the proposition would require any "prepackaged processed food or raw agricultural commodity that has been produced using genetic modification" to include the label "Produced with genetic engineering," beginning July 1, 2016.

According to Brusco, “It is estimated that 80% of conventional processed foods in North America contain genetically modified organisms (GMO) ingredients. More than two dozen U.S. states have active pending legislation in favor of mandatory GMO labeling. Americans are almost equally divided about eating genetically modified vegetables, fruits, and grains, with about half would not eat them. Americans are less comfortable about eating meat from genetically engineered animals.”

The Nutrition Facts Label is going through a bit of a face lift - with changes to the serving size requirements, removal of calories from fat, revision of daily values of certain nutrients, required declarations of sugars, and more. The Right to Know Colorado suggested that an additional change to the Nutrition Facts Label should add a statement about GMO ingredients, similar to an allergen statement, stating that doing so would "fulfill Colorado consumers' right to know, enabling them to make educated food purchases and dietary choices."
