Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/18/2014 -- Robotic vacuum cleaners remained a hotspot in vacuum cleaners in Japan. While the growth rate of robotic vacuum cleaners slowed down in 2013 compared to the previous year, the category continued to develop, and accounted for 5% of total volume sales in vacuum cleaners. The growing number of double-income households and the ageing population in Japan increased awareness and demand for convenient and time-saving vacuum cleaners. These two consumer groups purchase robotic vacuum cleaners as a second vacuum cleaner while using their cylinder vacuum cleaners as their primary vacuum cleaner. Thus, robotic vacuum cleaners did not cannibalise sales of the latter. Furthermore, with the recent of success of Roomba by iRobot Corp, numerous manufacturers introduced and refined their ranges of robotic vacuum cleaners. This provided consumers with more price options, with ?9,980 the lowest retail price.

Competitive Landscape

Vacuum cleaners is concentrated and domestic manufacturers accounted for the majority of volume sales in 2013. Panasonic Corp was already a leading player and the acquisition of the Sanyo brand in 2012 enhanced its position. The former Sanyo?s products such as Airsis were relaunched under the Panasonic brand and this attracted consumers wishing to clean air after vacuum cleaning. Panasonic?s new product launches in 2013 focused largely on dust bag format vacuum cleaners as opposed to the cyclone format in 2012. This reflected strong replacement demand from elderly consumers, who continue to favour dust bag format vacuum cleaners.

Industry Prospects

Vacuum cleaners is expected to register a stagnant CAGR over the forecast period. Robotic vacuum cleaners will be a key category in determining the future performance of vacuum cleaners in Japan as it is one of a few bright spots in consumer appliances. However, the challenge for the category will remain its high pricing position, which is a barrier to acceptance among consumers in the mass market. As a result, the future impact of robotic vacuum cleaners will not be sufficient to boost sales of vacuum cleaners over the forecast period.
