World's First "Green" Airport Fully Operational at Baltra, Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands, a home to the world’s most rare plants and animals is well known for its natural beauty.

Quito, Ecuador -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/15/2014 -- The islands, located just a few miles away from Ecuador are the main source of inspiration for Charles Darwin to state his Theory of Evolution. The attractive nature and pleasant climate that these islands offer has succeeded in bringing in a lot of people to spend their holidays over the Galapagos Island Ecuador Tour.

Apart from being known to be the only place on earth where one can find abundant nature, The Galapagos Islands are also a home to the World’s First “Green” airport on the Baltra Islands. This airport has been developed keeping in mind all the factors that may help save the environment. The construction of this building is done keeping in mind the availability of natural light that can be used within the premises. This has helped in reducing the amount of power consumption that may be required for lighting.

The building is spread across 6,000 square meters which is almost three times larger than the older building or the air terminal. The airport is also known to require just about 30% of potable water that would be required for a building of the same size. This shows that the authorities are not only concerned about power conservation but also water.

The last phase of the building includes a power generation plant that contains about 356 solar panels. These panels will be used to produce energy using sunlight and will cover mostly 50% of the energy requirement of the building. The panels were to be set up using 50% of the debris of the older structure. The shopping mall and the food court are also made using the same debris while a few of them are used to fill in the septic tank within the premises. Although the building seems to be larger than the earlier one, there is nothing excess that they have used. Everything done is in correct proportion and done with a thought for the environment.

This “Green” airport has now made it easier for people to opt for a Galapagos Island Ecuador Tour as there is an airport on an island that is within the group. The airport has now made it feasible for tourists to travel to the islands, mainly without affecting the environment that it is famous for.
