New York City, N.Y, April 28, 2011 — A recent study carried out at Rutgers and Taipei Medical Universities, has confirmed that a naturally occurring antioxidant found in blueberry’s called pterostilbene, may have more health benefits than resveratrol at protecting the colon from the threat of disease.

Pterostilbene and resveratrol are phytoalexins that are released when a plants natural defense system is stressed or under attack from pathogens and fungus. Both resveratrol and pterostilbene are hydrocarbons and both compounds have demonstrated significant potential health benefits.

The study used mice and examined the effect of both resveratrol and pterostilbene in preventing chemically-induced colon cancer as resveratrol consumption, from red wine, has previously reported to reduce the risk of certain cancers.

The mice were split into three groups and were injected with a compound, that is known to cause colon cancer tumors, called azoxymethane (AOM). The mice were then fed a daily supplement containing either resveratrol or pterostilbene for six weeks with a control group not receiving either supplement.

After six weeks, carcinogenesis (cancer formation) was assessed. The researchers found that both resveratrol and pterostilbene worked along the same signalling pathways, reducing markers of inflammation, enhancing expression of antioxidant enzymes and regulating gene expression. However, pterostilbene was found to be more effective than resveratrol.

This is significant because previous studies on resveratrol have found it to have a strong anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effect and given that pterostilbene has been found to have an even stronger reaction lends credence to the fact that cures for many diseases can be delivered from natural compounds

The researchers concluded that “when the above findings are taken together, they suggest that both [resveratrol and pterostilbene] block cellular inflammation and oxidative stress… In comparison, pterostilbene was a more potent chemopreventive agent than resveratrol for the prevention of colon cancer.”
