New York City, N.Y, September 2, 2011 — A recent study conducted by scientists from the University of Texas Health Science has suggested that polyphenols and antioxidants found within grapes, such as resveratrol and ellagic acid, can help to combat the threat of skin cancer when combined together.

The study, which was published in Cancer Prevention Research, aimed to determine whether certain antioxidant compounds found within fruits such as muscadine grapes could help to stave off and prevent the development of tumours and in particular, skin cancer.

The molecules studied were resveratrol, grape skin/seed extract, ellagic acid, D Glucarate and calcium. All of these molecules, which can be found within muscadine grapes, boast powerful antioxidant capabilities and the aim of the study was to see if these compounds worked better alone or provided more health benefits when taken in a synergistic blend.

The scientists took mice with skin cancer and administered ellagic acid, D Glucarate, resveratrol and grape seed extract both orally and topically. The results showed that even at low doses, the compounds showed maximum therapeutic benefits when combined with each other because each molecule has a specific task in the prevention of tumour growth. The results also showed that the mice who were administered a single compound only did not show such positive effects as the combined groups.

One of the researchers, Dr. Zbigniew Walaszek commented: “Both the combined agents and the combined treatments work better than single agents or treatments in prevention of skin cancer,”

The results are positive as they provide new ways of developing sunscreens which at present contain some toxins and parabens.
