How resveratrol could help Malaria affected countries

New York City, N.Y, November 22, 2010 — A study presented at The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygienes 59th Annual Meeting, has demonstrated that Resveratrol can help to fight malaria. This has raised hopes that a new vaccination will be possible to combat the illness that claims over a million victims every year.

The National Institutes of Health study claims that treatment of red blood cells infected by malaria, with resveratrol andanti-malarial drugs, significantly reduces its ability to bind to the body’s cells and blood vessels. This, they indicate, results in a lower chance of developing a severe case of malaria.

Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease which is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of the Americas, Asia, and Africa.

In humans, the parasites travel to the liver, where over a period of months, weeks or even years, enter the bloodstream and infect red blood cells. Some of its symptoms include fevers, vomiting, anemia and convulsions and can result in death if not treated properly.
