I have been an analyst for 25 years and have watched RIM wrestle with this same outage problem time after time. Every few years we get pinched by yet another major problem.
We are currently experiencing the next big RIM Blackberry outage. Sometimes these outages just hit the USA. Other times they hit other countries.
However this is not new. Every few years we see RIM having major outages.
The last time was a couple of years ago. At that time RIM was still strong and growing.
This time RIM is struggling with smartphone makers like Apple and Google and cannot afford these outages.
In the past RIM was still the best way to have one device with a phone, email, text messaging and web access.
However today the marketplace has found competitors they often like more.
Will this new outage affect RIM more than in the past?
For the first time I am now saying yes it will. This will not be the final nail in RIM’s coffin, but where in the past RIM always came back, this will give customers yet another reason to look at other devices.
This outage will hurt RIM. So will future outages. RIM cannot afford to have any more outages. However we have grown to expect it haven’t we.
Today customers rely on their wireless phone for telephone calls, email, text messaging, web access and more. Today more than any other time with new competition really impacting RIM I think this will become a growing problem for the company.
