Sony reports a wider loss in 1Q. There are all sorts of excuses, but the company has been losing for the last few years so the problem is obviously much deeper.
Sony has been wrestling with these losses for at least four years.
Consumer electronics and television have been seeing continual losses.
They must control costs of course, but more so they must create the next wave to ride and they continue to fail at doing that.
Sony remains one of the strongest brand names in the consumer electronics business. So why can’t they create the next wave after wave when competitors do.
I have been saying for the last several years that Sony needs to make a decision regarding the direction going forward. They are at a crossroads right now.
There is so much to being a success in the marketplace. One is brand. The Sony brand is still strong, but very tired. It needs to be reinvigorated.
They also must either create or be in the next successful growth wave. That will make the difference. So far we have seen nothing to say they understand that yet.
