C Spire calls this their Home Phone Connect service and starts with a $20 per month plan which costs less than regular local phone lines.
I have talked about how the wireless phone business would start to compete with the wire line business with fixed wireless service. Basically it acts like a local phone line in the home or office, but instead of being connected to the phone company by a hard line it is connected wirelessly using the cell phone network.
That is what C Spire Wireless is starting. They have competed with AT&T Mobility for years. Now they are starting to compete with the landline portion of AT&T’s business.
That means a wireless company is now competing with a wire line company for the same services. This raises competition to a new level.
AT&T Mobility can compete with AT&T in the same way.
We will see more of this going forward as the marketplace changes.
The local phone market is under attack from a variety of fronts. Cable television companies offer a VoIP phone service. The wireless industry is winning customers away from the landline providers. So are VoIP providers.
C Spire is now competing in a new slice of the pie. In this slice they don’t compete with other wireless companies. Now they are competing with wire line companies. This will require separate marketing and advertising so expect to see this.
Instead of customers doing business with different companies for wireless and wire line, C Spire will offer both.
I expect to see more of this from other wireless companies as we move forward as the industry transforms.
I would say the main target audience for this service are people who already use cell phones for their main communications device, but aren’t ready for a variety of reasons to cut the cord yet.
