New York City, N.Y, July 19, 2011 — A recent study carried out by the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Florida has confirmed that resveratrol, when taken with ellagic acid and querecetin, is more beneficial at inducing apoptosis in Leukemia cells when taken together rather than standalone.

The aim of the study was to establish whether the antocarcinogenic properties of polyphenolic compounds found within muscadine grapes such as resveratrol, quercetin and ellagic acid, could work better in a synergistic relationship as opposed to on their own.

The researchers hypothesised that these polyphenols, when working in synergy, were more efficient at inducing apoptosis and reducing the cell growth in human leukemia cells.

They tested this theory by altering cell cycle kinetics, proliferation and apoptosis and then incubating the leukemia cells with ellagic acid, resveratrol and quercetin as both single compounds and in various combinations.

The results showed that resveratrol when combined with ellagic acid was most beneficial at inducing apoptosis, cancer cell death but that also that significant alterations in cell cycles were observed with the use of single compounds and the other combinations.

Further analysis confirmed that the synergy of both resveratrol and quercetin and resveratrol and ellagic acid contained the most anti-carcinogenic properties. Results indicate that the anti-carcinogenic potential of foods containing polyphenols may not be based on the effects of individual compounds, but may involve a synergistic enhancement of the anti-cancer effects.

Mary Green, a spokesperson for muscadine grape seed extract specialist, Muscadinex welcomed these results: “Once again we are being shown the potential health benefits of naturally occurring molecules, such as resveratrol and ellagic acid found in muscadine grape seeds. We at Muscadinex believe that supplying the best possible ingredients, naturally rich in these polyphenols and without any fillers or additives, is the only way prepare a supplement. That is why we have designed Muscadinex to be only pure muscadine grape seed extract rich in resveratrol, ellagic acid and quercetin.”

Muscadinex is made using only pure muscadine grape seed extract from North Carolina and is the strongest grape producer of resveratrol. Muscadine grapes differ from other varieties because they contain an extra two chromosomes and this is what gives them their extra health potential. The extra genetic content in Muscadines results in a wider variety of molecules like polyphenols and flavonoids, where over 100 compounds have been identified in Muscadine grapes.

Another advantage of American muscadine grapes over European wine grapes is that only muscadines have resveratrol in the seed, but European grapes only have resveratrol in the skin. So resveratrol from European grapes must come from the skin. But Muscadinex resveratrol comes from seed, which contain 43 different healthy molecules.
