Atlanta, GA, June 17, 2011 — Comment from the desk of Jeff Kagan, Tech Analyst
I got an interesting email this morning about several different companies supporting Lightsquared in their efforts to build a company and advance the wireless industry.
This is no surprise. Support is not the problem.
I think everyone, except possible direct competitors, support Lightsquared in their efforts.
The problem that all this support does not fix is the damage to the GPS industry caused by Lightsquared technology. That is what they need to fix.
I appreciate their efforts to smooth over the rough edges, but doing it like this simply will turn the market against them because it looks like they are trying to take our eye off the ball.
The best solution would be for Lightsquared to admit there is a problem and commit to finding a solution.
Having a problem at this stage is not uncommon. How you handle that problem and the messaging you use to communicate with the market will define how the marketplace will evaluate you as a company going forward. Are you a company that is full of integrity and one which we can count on? Are you a company who will work hard to improve and solve problems? Or are you a company who will try to dazzle the marketplace with a dog and pony show and try to side track the concerns we all see?
That is the question. So its ok to put out a press release saying you have support. I think you have lots of support. I even think the GPS industry would be supportive, IF you can solve the problem and not hurt them.
That is what you need to focus on right now and not the rest of this stuff which can only be meant to sidetrack us.
