Atlanta, GA, June 7, 2011 — In my What’s Next I want to tell you about how Verizon Wireless is jumping into the mHealth marketplace by partnering with their own pharmacy benefits vendor Medco Health Solutions. They have launched the Medco Pharmacy mobile App for smart phones.

There are a growing number of medical and pharma Apps coming to the market every day. Medco Health Solutions focuses on reducing the costs of medications. Among other things it gives reminders to take your medicine. It also warns of interactions and it tells the patient how much it will cost with their health insurance plan.

Today patients don’t know how much things will cost until they finally get the bill weeks later. This helps them take control of their own finances. Talk about empowering the patient.

One of the biggest challenges was developing a simple App. As a test, Verizon Wireless is currently making this App available to its workers who use the Medco Pharmacy. When they are convinced they have it ready for the marketplace, they plan to roll it out to 100 million customers.

Verizon Wireless as well as every other major wireless player like AT&T Mobility and Sprint Nextel are trying to successfully crack the code and enter the mobile health space. It is a huge opportunity, but there are still more questions than answers.

Medco Health Solutions seems to have this same goal in mind and are moving quickly to enter the market.

This is the very early days of this new revolution, and it is by far one of the more exciting parts of the rapidly growing and changing wireless and smart phone and App market.
