Truths about Gardasil®, Cervarix® and Cervical Cancer Suppressed

Los Angeles, California, May 13, 2010 — Three women from three countries, Emily Tarsell; United States, Judy Wilyman; Australia, and Freda Birrell; United Kingdom/Scotland, are actively educating their respective governments about Gardasil®, Cervarix® and Cervical Cancer.

Judy Wilyman Ph.D. is lecturer and researcher at Murdoch University in environmental health. The Australian Vaccination Network (AVN) asked if she would provide HPV vaccine facts for a brochure to show real risks of HPV infection and of cervical cancer. Judy states the literature clearly shows an infection with HPV 16 or 18 is no indication that a woman is likely to get cervical cancer.

Facts about the Disease

1. In 2004, the death rate from cervical cancer in Australia was 1.9/100,000 women; a very low risk to women
2. Infection with Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is not an indication you will get cervical cancer. 80% of women will be infected with HPV but 90% will show no clinical symptoms.
3. Lifetime risk of dying from cervical cancer in developed countries is approx. 0.25%.
4. The incidence of HPV 16/18 globally does not vary with the incidence of cervical cancer. Prevalence of HPV 16 is similar in all countries but 80% of cervical cancer occurs in developing countries.
5. Sexual behavior conducive to the acquisition of sexually transmitted infectious diseases increases a women’s risk of developing cervical cancer
6. Agent, host and environment all play a role in the development of disease.
7. Multiple partners for men and women are a risk factor for cervical cancer. Prostitutes are a known high risk group and sex without condoms increases the risk.
8. Scientists admit that HPV on its own does not cause cervical cancer. A co-factor is needed to trigger cancer eg. another virus – HSV-2, dietary factors or oral contraceptives.
9. The Australian Health Department calls this drug an HPV vaccine not a cervical cancer vaccine
10. There are 20 strains of HPV associated with cancer but only 2 covered in the vaccine.

Trials of the Vaccine

1. Trials did not observe that it would prevent any cervical cancer
2. Researchers were observing the incidence of precancerous lesions in 16-26 year old women – an age
group that rarely gets cervical cancer.
3. In young women pre-cancerous lesions are known to have a high clearance rate.
4. Commonwealth Serum Laboratories (pharmaceutical company) funded this research at the Cancer and Immunology Research Centre at the University of Queensland
5. Trials of the vaccine were funded by Merck
6. 10 of the authors of the trials were employed by Merck and the company has financial arrangements

Other Concerns

1. It is a genetically modified vaccine
2. It contains 225 micrograms of aluminum adjuvant; more than most vaccines and known to cause
allergies/anaphylaxis and autoimmune reactions in humans
