Boston, MA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 06/25/2014 -- Value sales of biscuits are expected to increase by 3% in current terms in 2013, which is lower than in the previous year. Biscuits are considered primarily a snack food and, as such, increasing health awareness has somewhat affected biscuit sales in Taiwan. Nevertheless, there is still demand from Taiwanese consumers who are instead opting for better alternatives within the category. Along the same lines, healthier varieties of biscuits at higher unit prices helped to drive growth over the review period. Higher disposable incomes have enabled consumers to trade up to products with improved ingredients thus driving up value sales, as retail volume growth remained relatively low.

Competitive Landscape

A long-time player in the industry, I-Mei Foods Co is set to maintain its lead in biscuits in 2013 with a 18% value share, a slight drop from the previous year. As the category leader, I-Mei Foods Co does not rest on its laurels but instead launches new product varieties every year. It owns a wide range of biscuits, including a presence in chocolate coated biscuits, cookies, filled biscuits, plain biscuits and sandwich biscuits. In terms of innovation, I-Mei Foods Co launched a popular series of I-Mei savoury biscuits and crackers in four different flavours in 2012. A new flavour for I-Mei Puffs, egg pudding, also attracted many consumers. Sales of this new flavour even exceeded those of I-Mei's existing popular coffee flavour.
