Cat food recorded growth in both volume and value terms in 2014 due to a more positive consumer attitude towards wet cat food and a decreasing tendency of feeding cats with home-made food. Dry food also appealed more to consumers given its lower prices, covering demand from those on limited budgets. Although private label exerted a negative pressure on prices, there was still high potential for product diversification that could boost sales.

Competitive Landscape

The share of mid-priced products fell over the review period as competition was concentrated on high-quality and affordable goods. As a general result of the emergence of private label, cat food is polarising with economy and premium products cannibalising sales of mid-priced goods, especially within dry cat food.
