Chlorinated paraffin are manufactured by chlorination of paraffin wax or n-paraffin in batch process. This is exothermic reaction with hydrochloric acid as a by-product. A stabilizer is added to the batch after removal of traces of acid to form finished product. Chlorinated paraffin are divided into three class: Short chain (C10-C13), Mid chain (C14-C17) and Long chain (C17-C30+). Mid chain chlorinated paraffin dominates the global market while long chain compounds are the second commonly used chlorinated paraffin. Chlorinated paraffin are mostly inert and insoluble in water.
