The infographic animates the top ten (10)physical and mental problems that people would most frequently encounter in old age. For the mental grouping, five (5) million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, while three times more (3x) live with other cognitive impairments such as memory loss (16 million). Seven-percent (7%) of the population is affected with depression, but more commonly depression is associated with people who have other debilitating illnesses that render them immobile or limit their functions, such as cancer or heart disease.

Physical problems on the other hand are more prevalent among Americans. Obesity, for example, affects 1 in 3 seniors, arthritis affects 50% of seniors and 75% of all hip, spine and distal forearm fractures occur among patients 65 years and older.

Other age-related issues such as wearing glasses or dentures or hearing impairments are prevalent in 92%, 25%, and 50% of seniors, respectively.

More significant factors such as heart disease account for 35% off all senior deaths and cancer accounts for an additional 22%.

Physicians and other health experts advise that screening for cancer should begin during an individual's 40's, while maintaining a healthy lifestyle of a balanced diet and exercise for decades to come will help reduce risk of heart complications by as much as 80%.
