As for KakaoTalk, earnings coming from the sales of content, including emoticons, constituted 2.3 percent of the total as of 2013. The weight of content increased to 2.8 percent in the first quarter of 2014. The majority of earnings most probably come from the emoticons sales.

The way people are communicating these days through mobile devices is changing from text messages to non-verbal methods like emoticons, this may explain he growth that emoticons have brought these two companies. According to a survey done by market research firm Macromillembrain, 70.7 percent of respondents agreed with the statement, “An increasing number of people will use mobile emoticons in the future.” When asked why they are buying emoticons, 67.8 percent of the respondents said that it is attributable to their desire to express various kinds of emotions.

What’s in store for Facebook emoticons 2014? Of course, the social media giant doesn’t want to be left behind and continuously improving their messenger app. Also, the acquisition of WhatsApp is still being discussed - this could be Facebook’s bet to combat Line and KakaoTalk. Come to think of it, why WhatsApp? Facebook already have its messenger app. Mark Zuckerberg stated: “There are countries [such as] Korea or Japan where another messaging service is bigger, but if you look across the world, WhatsApp – across Europe, Latin America, India, a lot of places in Asia – is the clear leader.”

Facebook sees WhatsApp as the tool that will fill in its global gaps. “Once we get to being a service that has a billion, two billion, three billion people one day, there are many clear ways we can monetize,” he said menacingly.
