Metro Tech Career Academy Holds "Thank Your Mentor Day" to Thank Mentors

Oklahoma City, OK -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/09/2016 -- January is officially National Mentoring Month, and Thank Your Mentor Day was created back in 2002 by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public  Health, as well as MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership.

Two community partners, Lilies & Reed Society and OMOS Teambuilding, were acknowledged for the time they offer to mentor students at Metro Career Academy in Oklahoma City on a weekly basis. These mentors are dedicated to helping young students get on the right path in life and work towards the careers of their choosing.

LaTasha Howell, who is the founder and CEO of Lilies & Reeds Society, has been meeting with students at Metro Career Academy for over two years now. Howell meets with young women twice each week, helping them to focus on life skills and empowering them in every way.

Howell has stated that their main focus at MCA is to encourage the young women in the mentoring program to overcome statistics; they make them aware of what their potentials and possibilities are for the future, teaching goal-setting techniques that will help them be successful.

L.I.L.I.E.S. stands for lovely, incredible leaders intelligently escaping statistics. R.E.E.D.S. stands for Responsible, edifying, educated, dedicated souls. The latter group does mostly hands-on activities to strengthen students individually and as a group. She said that the activities that the students participate in are designed to teach them that they can work well separately and as part of a team with others.

Derek Sier, who is the owner of OMOS Team Building, has been providing students with mentoring at MCA for two years now. Sier visits the school on a weekly basis, focusing on soft skill development as well as team building exercises with a fun and creative approach.

Sier stated that his mentoring group talks about a wide range of topics, including why good hygiene is important as well as what is considered to be proper business attire. He focuses on appropriate social conduct and how it changes depending on the situation. His program is broken into four unique concepts, including "how to be good men in the community", "how to be good men at school and work", "how to be good men at home", and "how to identify men with themselves." These mentoring programs have already had a noticeable effect among students involved in them, raising their self-esteem and providing them with valuable life lessons and information.
