NFC could never be used in a major way until it was widely deployed in devices. In the last year that deployment has happened very rapidly. Now the questions are what will be the major applications? Who in the value chain will mainly benefit? The world's leading financial card companies, mobile phone operators, manufacturers, chip makers, consumer goods companies and others are intensely interested and investing strongly.

NFC is a set of short-range wireless technologies, typically requiring a distance of 4cm or less to initiate a connection partly because people do not trust making secure transactions at the longer distances typical with Bluetooth, WiFi and other short range radio protocols. The most popular mobile phone and tablet operating system is heavily committed to NFC.

Mobile phones continue to be by far the most important potential and actual focus of NFC; the technology is particularly suitable for them. The SIM card in your mobile phone is a smart card identifying your account to the network. On NFC phones, the SIM is being extended to act as the Secure Element that can hold other apps such as payment cards. For example, NFC allows you to share small packets of data between an NFC tag and an Android-powered device, or between two Android-powered devices. Most contactless point-of-sale payment systems use an NFC-compatible contactless interface and many of the world's transportation access systems are NFC compatible so considerable infrastructure is already in place for use by NFC-enabled devices. Although progress with transport systems and payments is slow.

Many trials of other potential uses of NFC continue to be created but they tend to be a poor indication of what happens at rollout. To say contactless cards are NFC is playing with words: they predate NFC and would succeed if NFC had never been invented.

This report examines the existing and future applications of NFC technology and the major players competing in the market, along with ten year market forecasts. It covers issues such as standardization, security and licensing, plus global progress split by country and key interviews from 2013.

Vietnam has for some years now been aggressively expanding its national infrastructure and growing its subscriber bases across all market segments. Progress in developing the mobile market has been especially impressive, although there was been a substantial moderation in growth over the last few year; in fact the year 2013 saw the mobile market experience a correction, as the mobile numbers were revised downwards. In the meantime, the internet market, and particularly the roll-out of broadband internet, was still in a relatively early stage of development, there has been a significant rise in the country’s online access over the last decade. Most importantly, there has been a major push into mobile broadband.

It needs to be said that the broad market growth in Vietnam is happening amidst a confusing set of market statistics. As the country’s telecom sector was clearly expanding in a strong manner, the figures published both by the government and the operators were often contradictory and earlier figures were often revised. The government reported that there were 154 million mobile subscribers by end-2010, an increase of 40% for the year and representing an overall penetration of 174%. The total figure included 16.4 million fixed-line services by end-2010. Yet in September 2012, according to Vietnam’s General Statistics Office (GSO), the number of telephone subscribers nationwide was 135.9 million, which included 15 million fixed-line subscribers and almost 121 million mobile phone subscribers. The government has been casting the activity in the market as positive growth; yet there appeared to be a process in place for regularly revising the mobile subscriber statistics being published. The conflicting and missing numbers have made it difficult to obtain a considered view of the market. In this report, where there is any doubt about the statistics issued by the government/operators, what are considered the most likely figures are published in our tables of statistics.

The incumbent operator Telstra continues to benefit from the company’s turnaround being implemented by its current CEO. It dominates the fixed-line and broadband sectors, and is also the main player in the mobile sector, having been the first to take advantage of mobile broadband opportunities with its Next G network. This was followed through with it being the first to launch LTE services, gaining it considerable market advantages. Optus is determined to keep pace with Telstra as the mobile segment migrates to LTE, though it continues to lack the vision to make a significant impression to attract consumers, and so address stagnant subscriber growth.

Vodafone continues to struggle with poor customer perception of its network reliability, though strong investments in recent quarters, combined with attractive data plans and schemes such as adding premium Spotify services for subscribers, have been noted by consumers. This is helping to slow customer losses. The company’s determination to claw its way back into the market should show dividends into 2015. NBN Co has been added to this report for the first time; it is rapidly becoming the next big first-tier company and will grow into the dominant infrastructure company in the country.
