New Market Report: Cigars in Portugal

New Consumer Goods market report from Euromonitor International: "Cigars in Portugal"

Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/07/2014 -- Although the cigar category in Portugal is developing dynamically, it remains a small niche in terms of total tobacco sales. Many consumers still regard cigars as expensive items to be smoked only on special occasions rather than on an everyday basis.

In addition, smoking a cigar is often seen as rather extravagant and is associated with snobbish behaviour and a superior attitude. Nonetheless, the situation is slowly changing and smoking a cigar or cigarillo is becoming the domain of an expanding audience. More people are reaching for such products, being more open to trying out new smoking experiences for a variety of reasons, including travelling more and exploring new products and ways of social entertainment, the increasing widespread distribution of high-quality cigars in Portugal, as well as the growing number of new product developments across all price segments, resulting in cigars and cigarillos becoming more accessible to consumers in different income groups.

Competitive Landscape:

Empor - Importac¸ao SA, the Portuguese subsidiary of Altadis SA, continued to be the leader in cigars excluding cigarillos in 2013. The company offers some of the main cigar brands in Portugal. The category is still dominated by Cuban cigars, while 'puros' from the Dominican Republic command a smaller share of sales. Empor offers all the main global brands from the world-famous Cohiba, positioned at the top end of the category, to the more affordable Jose' L Piedra and Romeo y Julieta. The company accounted for a 5% volume share of cigars in 2013 and an 88% share of cigars excluding cigarillos. In cigarillos, the leading company in 2013 was Scandinavian Tobacco Group Iberia SA with a 41% volume share and a 40% share in the wider cigar category. The company's success is mainly based on its well-established and popular Cafe' Cre'me brand, in which the company continues to invest. Arnold Andre Cigars GmbH & Co KG, the company which distributes the Clubmaster brand, ranked second in cigarillos in 2013 with a volume share of 27%.

Industry Prospects:

Cigarillos looks set to remain the most dynamic performer, with volume and constant value sales expected to grow at CAGRs of 4% and 5% respectively. The fact that cigarillos are much cheaper and smoked much more frequently than other types of cigars will help to sustain the positive development of the category. The increasing popularity of cigarillos (including flavoured products) among women and social smokers will also fuel growth in volume and constant value sales, as will new product developments. At the same time, the category will continue to benefit as some Portuguese switch from cigarettes to cigarillos in the hope that this will help them to reduce their overall tobacco consumption, thereby saving them money and improving their health.
