New Market Report: Wine in Algeria

New Beverages research report from Euromonitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/12/2014 -- Wine registered 5% total volume growth and 11% total value growth in current terms during 2013. This solid volume and value growth resulted from rising domestic production as well as strong increases in import volumes. The reopening of bars and restaurants with the appropriate licenses allowed consumers to return to previous habits they had had before 2005 when the strict legislation in each wilaya led to the closure of over 2,000 points of sale for wine throughout Algeria.

Competitive Landscape:

ONCV (Office National de Commercialisation de Produits Vinicoles) is State-owned company which has maintained its leadership in wine in Algeria for many years and which remained the leading player in the category during 2013. The company continued to focus on improving its wine production standards and enhancing the quality of its wine towards the end of the review period. One of the company's best selling products is the still red wine La Cuvee de Monica and the company ended 2013 by launching two new wines. However, the company continues to focus on exports and improving the recognition of the quality of its wine abroad, where it sees the potential to expand its operations as far superior to its potential to expand domestically due to the limited drinking culture in Algeria. This also contributed to the company facing higher levels of competition from other players such as domestic companies Les Vignobles de l'Oranie (VDO), Grands Crus de l'Ouest and large-scale importer Groupe Castel Algerie, which generated higher sales during 2013.

Industry Prospects:

Wine is expected to increase in each of total volume and total value at a CAGR of 5% in constant 2013 terms over the forecast period. Expanding domestic production, regular new product launches and the reopening of consumer foodservice and retail outlets which sell alcoholic drinks since early 2013 are all expected to contribute to the solid performance of wine over the forecast period.
