Since colonial times, tobacco is at the core of the Dominican economy. One reflection of that is that one of the only five tobacco factories in the whole Spanish Empire in the XVIIIth century, was in Santo Domingo. As a consequence, its consumption has always been welcomed and appreciated. In many ways and in traditional circles, tobacco connoisseurship has always been equated with pride for what is Dominican. As a consequence of that background, higher-income Dominican men embrace the smoking of premium cigars and that is reflected in the spread of specialty shops and cigar clubs. Another pocket of consumption comes from lower-income (and also male) Dominicans. This group prefers machine-manufactured standard and small cigars at lower price points, and cigarillos. They buy mostly from independent small grocers. A third pocket of consumption comes from tourists. Helped by the growing reputation of having some of the finest handmade cigars in the world, most tourists buy cigars for consumption during their visit and for taking away, and as such they are the main consumers of handmade, premium cigars sold in the country.

Competitive Landscape

The main players in the cigars excluding cigarillos category are first and foremost La Aurora, the category leader, with a 32% volume share. The second largest player, with a 16% volume share, is Tabadom Holding. Finally, the third player, Tabacalera A Fuente y Cia, commands a 13% volume share.

Cigars is expected to see a value CAGR at constant 2013 prices of 3% over the forecast period.
