Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/24/2014 -- Fast food operations saw immense competition from other foodservice channels and from food specialist retailers during 2013. Channels such as caf?s/bars, 100% home delivery/takeaway, self-service cafeterias and even street stalls/kiosks gained ground against fast food by expanding the number of outlets and/or by extending their menus and dropping their prices. Also, food specialist retailers such as bakeries intensified the competition by increasing their emphasis on food on-the-go and take-away hot drinks.

Competitive Landscape

Domestic player Goody?s remained the leader in fast food in 2013, with a value share of 26% in chained fast food. The company operates the Goody?s burger fast food chain, which is the clear leader in this category, and still popular amongst Greeks; yet it has been greatly affected by the recession and the competition from other types of fast food, and has been closing down outlets in Greece.

Industry Prospects

The expected value performance in the forecast period is a negative CAGR of 5% at constant 2013 prices, whilst transactions are also anticipated to continue to fall, with a negative CAGR of 3%. Outlet numbers are expected to be stable, however, as more independent businesses will emerge as a result of high unemployment.

Fast food operators are expected to continue to feel the pressure from other foodservice channels or food specialists during 2013-2018. In particular, the dynamics seem to be far better for 100% home delivery/takeaway, for instance, in which operating costs are considerably lower, whilst consumers are increasing their demand for take-away food. At the same time, the growth of chained operations in self-service cafeterias is also expected to hinder the growth of fast food chains, due to reasons such as extended menu offerings or healthier options, which are typically provided by this type of foodservice outlet.
