Obesity Accounts for Escalating Arthritis Symptoms in Children

Portland, OR -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/09/2014 -- Childhood obesity is on the rise, and for many young people, this means an increased risk of early-onset arthritis. It’s difficult for parents to convince their children to get the exercise they need, but failing to do so can establish a lifetime pattern of obesity and arthritis. Many parents are turning to a glucosamine dietary supplement for their children as an alternative to prescription medications for arthritis pain relief.

“Glucosamine supplements work to alleviate inflammation that causes the swelling and pain associated with arthritis,” said Michelle O’Sullivan, spokesperson for VitaBreeze.

Medical research has shown that obesity and arthritis are inextricably linked. Obese and overweight children are more likely to develop arthritis that could be remedied through increased levels of exercise. Conversely, obese youngsters are less likely to exercise due to the pain of arthritis because they’re overweight.

Arthritis isn’t a stand-alone disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it’s a symptom of more than 150 diseases, conditions and syndromes. It’s characterized by multiple levels of joint pain that intensifies with activity and being overweight is a primary risk factor in otherwise healthy children.

When an individual gains weight, it places additional strain on muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and the bursa between joints. Those soft tissues all work in concert to keep muscles moving smoothly and without undue friction. In overweight people, movement often causes inflammation of the soft tissues, resulting in swelling and pain.

Each additional pound of weight is equal to four pounds of pressure on joints. One of the primary targets of arthritis pain is the knees, though it can occur in the feet, hips and lower back. The pain worsens after physical activity, making youngsters even less likely to engage in any type of exercise.
