Royal Oak, MI -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/12/2011 -- General Motors is planning to expand the widely popular Chevrolet Cruze in the U.S. by adding a diesel engine, which will rival the Toyota Prius gas-electric hybrid’s fuel consumption. Matthews Hargreaves Chevrolet is excited to announce the new Cruze model to Detroit customers.
The diesel Cruze is expected to receive 50 miles per gallon on the highway and will help GM meet tightening government fuel economy standards. Chevrolet already has a diesel-engine Cruze that’s selling well in Australia, but it will not hit showrooms in the U.S. until at least 2013.
As the U.S.’s top-selling car, Dave Sullivan, an analyst with AutoPacific commented, “I couldn’t think of a better way for GM to capitalize on the momentum that Cruze has created for GM by adding a diesel.” While diesel engines are slightly more expensive initial, American auto consumers are starting to see the benefits of these fuel efficient cars.
