The 72-Hour Report: How Japan Is Navigating Uncharted Territories After S&P's U.S. Debt Downgrade

Public Finance Leaders Forum 2011, "Navigating Uncharted Territories After S&P's U.S. Debt Downgrade from its Gilt-Edged AAA Credit Rating", Conference Hosted by Golden Networking in New York City with the First Analysis of the Impact of the U.S. Credit Rating Downgrade by S&P

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/15/2011 -- The 72-Hour Report series will attempt to provide a chronicle of the impact of the U.S. credit rating downgrade by S&P in Japan, one of the most important financial centers of the world. Golden Networking's Public Finance Leaders Forum 2011, "Navigating Uncharted Territories After S&P's U.S. Debt Downgrade from its Gilt-Edged AAA Credit Rating" (http://www.PublicFinanceLeadersForum.com), September 9, New York City, will provide attendees with the first analysis of the consequences of this unprecedented step by one of the leading rating agencies.

On August 10, Tokyo stock Price IndeX, commonly known as TOPIX, opened at 785 but closed at 776.73. The Mothers Index stayed between 425 and 430, and REIT Index was down from 960 to 943. The yen and the dollar veered higher Wednesday as investors sought safety amid worries about high debt and slow growth in Europe and the U.S. But the risk of a sudden French downgrade, without any previous warning, was low, said Camilla Sutton, currency strategist at Scotia Capital. That such a fear could suddenly topple most currencies against the dollar was a sign of just how "very nervous and very vulnerable" financial markets are, she said. The dollar fell to 76.44 and Japanese yen from 77.01 yen, hovering just above a post-World War II low.

It is expected that this situation would continue. Traders consider the Japanese yen "safe," despite Japan's troubled economy, because Japanese investors hold much of the country's massive public debt. That lessens the risk of a financing crisis.
