Tourism Overview

In terms of foreign tourist arrivals, the improving trend in the Czech hospitality sector during the first three quarters of 2009 was maintained in Q409, with the rate of decline in foreign guest arrivals narrowing to -3.5% year-on-year (y-o-y). This compares with a fall of -9% y-o-y in Q209 and a substantial -17% y-o-y in the first quarter. Domestic tourism performed very badly in Q409, down by 9% y-o-y, after achieving positive growth in guest arrivals in Q3. Overall, however, domestic tourism fared better than foreign tourism in 2009, with arrivals declining by 2.6% and 8.5% y-o-y respectively.

Hospitality

In Q409, the hospitality sector recorded disappointing results, particularly compared with the improvement shown in Q309. Overnight stays by foreign and domestic tourists totalled about 6.8mn in Q409, down by 7.4% y-o-y, of which foreign tourist nights declined by 7% y-o-y and nights by domestic residents fell by over 8% y-o-y. Total guest numbers were down by 6% y-o-y to 2.4mn at collective accommodation establishments. Foreign tourist spa nights also fell sharply, by nearly 11% y-o-y. In 2009 as a whole, foreign tourism had a bad year. Total overnight stays by foreign and domestic tourists were down by 6% y-o-y, with foreign and domestic tourist nights declining by 10.5% and 1.3% y-o-y respectively. Not surprisingly, the number of guests from all the Czech Republic’s major source markets declined from the previous year, with considerable falls in arrivals from the UK, down by 23% y-o-y, and Russia, falling by 22%. Guest arrivals from Germany and Italy were down 4.8% and 3.5% y-o-y respectively.

Forecast Scenario

BMI continues to maintain its estimate of an annual decline of about 9% in the number of foreign tourist arrivals in 2009. We have slightly revised up our growth forecast for arrivals in 2010 to 2% y-o-y and anticipate a stronger rebound in 2011 of 4% y-o-y. The forecasts are based on economic recovery in the Czech Republic’s main source markets. These include the eurozone, which is expected to tentatively emerge from recession in 2010 but growth is anticipated to pick up to 1.8% in 2011, the UK, the US and Russia, with the latter two forecast to achieve relatively strong economic growth in 2010. A factor likely to restrict growth in arrivals over the next few years is the exchange rate, with the Czech koruna expected to resume its broad uptrend, particularly against the euro, in 2010 and 2011.

Prague Ruzynì Airport

During 2009 there was a notable fall in total passenger traffic at Prague Ruzynì Airport, which was down by nearly 8% y-o-y to 11.6mn. International passenger traffic fell by 7.9% to 11.5mn, while domestic passenger numbers fell by a less severe 4% y-o-y. There was positive y-o-y growth in total and international passenger traffic at the airport in January 2010. In March 2010, the Czech lower house of parliament, the Chamber of Deputies, overruled a presidential veto on a law banning the privatisation of Prague Ruzynì. The vote was led by the Czech Social Democratic Party (CSSD), which has opposed the privatisation from the beginning. If a leftwing coalition takes power in the legislative election at the end of May 2010, we believe privatisation of then airport is likely to be stopped.
