London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/23/2010 -- Darren Clarke, one of the most inspirational figures in recent Ryder Cup history, is set to be revealed today as vice-captain of Europe's team to face the United States in Wales in October. Sources said last night that Europe's captain, Colin Montgomerie, will announce the Irishman's appointment at Wentworth today, along with that of Paul McGinley and Thomas Bjorn.
The three men all stalwarts of past Ryder Cup glories will form one of the most experienced backroom staffs of any recent European team. But it is the selection of Clarke that will catch the eye. It is believed he was approached to join Montgomerie's team during the Open at St Andrews, days after finishing as runner-up in the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond.

A veteran of five Ryder Cup contests, he has been on the winning side four times and along with Lee Westwood formed one of the most formidable pairings to carry the European colours. But Clarke is most fondly remembered for his performance at the K Club in 2006 where, only weeks after the death of his wife, Heather, he won three points from three matches.
Few who were there will ever forget his opening shot of that week a 340-yard drive straight down the middle that led to a birdie and, ultimately, to yet another victory for the Clarke-Westwood pairing.
Disappointment followed in 2008 as he was passed over by Nick Faldo when it came to his wildcard picks. Clarke's absence from the team room was felt, not least by Westwood, as the European side fell to defeat against Paul Azinger's American squad in Kentucky.
As recently as last month Clarke had expressed hopes of being selected by Montgomerie as a player but if, as expected, he is unveiled as a vice-captain it would seem he has decided to move on to the next phase of a storied Ryder Cup career.
