Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/12/2015 -- Dejan Gacic is a hero to dogs and wolves in South Eastern Serbia. Vucjak Shelter started in 1979 with the rescue of a couple of dogs that had been abandoned on the streets, one of whom had been hit by a car. Dejan, being the man he is, could not stand by any longer and watch the dogs being kicked and hit to get them out of the way. He stepped in and the story began.
Since that time, hundreds of dogs that would have surely died on the streets have been rescued and brought to safety, starting out working out of an apartment, and gradually moving the rescue out of the city to a large parcel of land that Dejan had for just such a purpose.
In 2004, he received a call to rescue a Wolf that had been caught in a trap line and was destined to be killed by hunters on a regularly scheduled canned hunt for profit. He went to the wolf and when he saw this beautiful creature, it moved him in such a way that he knew he had to do something to help. Carefully getting the wolf into a cage and released from the leg hold, Dejan brought him to the large property and tended to his wounds. An instant bond was formed and today, 10 years later the beginnings of Vucjak Shelter & Wolf Sanctuary are now in the works.
Dejan wants a safe place to keep the wolves, a large fenced area where they can live naturally yet be protected from hunters. The Balkanian wolf has been exterminated in other areas of Eastern Europe and Dejan is determined to not see that happen here.
Today, with over 160 dogs and 17 wolves to care for, this man has been the sole savior of so many lives that he has lost count. He is a humble man, living without electricity or running water because the care of the animals is of utmost importance to him. He would not spend a penny on himself if an animal was in need.
He is a true unsung hero in a world that sadly overlooks the abuse done to animals on a daily basis.
