Are Pig Farmers Stuck in the Mud with Pig Meat Sales?

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/28/2015 -- Just in time for summer, the season of barbeques, garden parties and fetes, the market surrounding pig meat has finally begun to stabilise for the first time in over a year.

Internationally recognised red meat specialists Quality Meat Scotland have recently been analysing the pig meat markets across the UK and Europe;they discovered that across 2014 and early 2015 volumes of British pig meat being supplied across Europe had dropped by 5%, whilst annual production had increased on average by around 1.4% from the previous year.

The crossing over of these two market contributors has been forcing prices down across the previous year, as oversupply and lower demand made the market extremely competitive and required greater need for cold storage facilities and for longer periods of time. This provided great strain on pig farmers across the UK and Europe.

The European Commission eventually erected a storage scheme in March 2015 which is still in place, whereupon they cover cold storage costs for pig meat for 90 days or more for certain suppliers across Europe. This ease of cost on the production side of the industry – combined with the slightly lower cost of animal feed, which was brought down last year – has stabilised the pig meat economy slightly.

Stuart Ashworth, QMS Head of Economics Services, commented that "despite the strength of sterling and low European prices, pigmeat has not flowed into the UK. This suggests some loyalty among UK consumers for UK pigmeat."

So whilst demand and pricing may remain plateaued for now, the UK's pig meat economy at least is self-contained and remaining stable, rather than rapidly decreasing in price and demand.

British loyalty to home-grown food is great for the British economy, and with the summer on its way, pig produce in particular will be greatly popular with outdoor events;the most popular outdoor, crowd-pleasing food types vary from a classic British barbeque to a grand full hog roast.

New addition to the Ribble Valley team Louise Haines has commented:"the growing popularity of hogroasts and pulled pork across the UK will hopefullyhelp to increase the prosperity of pig meat sales over the coming summer months. Hog roasts are a novel, hassle-free way of catering for all types of events, from weddings, garden parties and local festivals. We always source locally, so are proud to know we help support the farmers in our local community."
