Palmetto Bay, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/11/2015 -- Palmer Trinity School recently hosted the largest gathering of global secondary educators at the Third Annual Global Educators Conference. The conference, sponsored by the Global Education Benchmark Group (GEBG), took place on April 24-25. More than 230 were in attendance from around the world.
The GEBG is an association of independent schools that works together to find best practices in global education to prepare students, academically and experientially, for a diverse and dynamic cultural and socio-economic world.
The program opened with a welcome from Palmer Trintiy's Head of School, Patrick Roberts, GEBG Chair, Joe Vogel from Hathaway Brown in Ohio and Palmetto Bay Mayor, the Honorable Eugene Flinn.
One of the first break-out sessions, "The Making of an American Student" led by David L. Thompson, Director of International Programs for The Hotchkiss School and Palmer Trinity's Global Scholar in Residence, Dr. Manjula Salomon was attended by more than sixty educators. The presentation focused on educating global citizens, and the steps needed to cultivate a mindset among students to go beyond the superficial and engage in inter-cultural conversations on important issues.
Palmer Trinity students enrolled in the new Upper School elective, Agents of Change, had the honor of being the first students ever to present at a Global Educators Conference. Dr. Leopoldo Llinas, Director of Environmental Stewardship and teacher of the new Social Entrepreneurship course at Palmer Trinity, also spoke on the Academy of Agents of Change curriculum that empowers students with the tools and experiences to successfully design, launch, and run social change ventures.
Highlight sessions included featured speakers Loung Ung, activist and author of First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers; TEDtalk speakers Bunker Roy and Meagan Fallone of the Barefoot College; and Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL-27) who addressed a controversial question about student travel programs to Cuba.
