The American Heart Association Recommends Fish Consumption at Least Twice a Week

Orlando, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/18/2015 -- Fish has long been believed to be healthy and ideal for individuals who want to take care of their heart. This is especially true for those who want to lower their risk of cardiovascular disease. Experts even recommend consumption of fish on a weekly basis.

The American Heart Association recommends eating fish at least two times a week. According to research, the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil can help decrease the risk of arrhythmias. This condition is characterized by abnormal heartbeats and can lead to sudden death. Omega-3s are also believed to reduce blood pressure and triglyceride levels slightly, as well as slow down the growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque.

"Fatty fish, such as herring, salmon, mackerel, albacore tuna, lake trout and sardines, contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

Increasing consumption of foods that have omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, is highly recommended. However, for individuals who are suffering from coronary artery disease, it can be more beneficial to speak with their healthcare provider about taking supplements. Individuals with high triglyceride levels will also need larger doses.

Individuals who use capsules containing more than 3 grams of omega-3 fatty acids should make sure that that they do it with the permission of their physician. It is important to note that in some people, high intakes can cause excessive bleeding.

"It is also important to remember that there are certain types of fish that contain high levels of mercury, dioxins, PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and other environmental contaminants. Larger, older predatory fish often contain high levels of these dangerous substances," added O'Sullivan.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends that children and pregnant women avoid consuming fish that are believed to contain the highest level of mercury contamination. The fish or shellfish that are known to have low amounts of mercury are: canned light tuna, shrimp, catfish, pollock and salmon. On the other hand, king Mackerel, swordfish, shark and tile fish are known to contain high levels of mercury.

A variety of fish types has become an important part of the diet of individuals with cardiovascular disease. However, due to the increasing amounts of environmental pollutants in the bodies of water where marine species dwell, it has become challenging to determine whether or not one fish has high mercury levels.

Many people with cardiovascular disease are resorting to fish oil supplements mainly because they may be safer to use. There are also some fish oil supplements that contain higher concentrations of omega-3s, and they are typically preferred by cardiovascular patients (http://www.amazon.com/Omega-Fish-Oil-Supplement-Softgels/dp/B00O8NS20K/?ie=UTF8&m=A3OG9DHZ3GI58O&keywords=fish+oil).
