Federal Data Breach Inspires BestIDtheftCompanys.com to Complete New Survey

BestIDtheftCompanys.com (BIDTC) releases new survey displaying people’s preference on being informed of a personal data breach.

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/10/2015 -- BestIDtheftCompanys.com (BIDTC) releases new survey results on people's preference for data breach notifications. BIDTC is searching to learn what people are looking for in terms of being notified of a data breach.

With the recent major data breach happening in Washington on the identity theft crisis that affected over 4 million federal employees BIDTC has looked to know what consumers are looking for in being notified about data breaches.

BestIDtheftCompanys.com (BIDTC) put out a survey to understand how consumers want to be notified about a personal data breach.

The results were to help determine how best to direct consumers to the right companies. It also was to see if any of BIDTC's ranking criteria would need adjustments to better match what consumers are looking for. The initial survey had 743 respondents.

The survey was given with the following question:

What type of notification is best to inform you of a data breach?

a. Text Message (41.7%)
b. Email (37.4%)
c. Phone Call (21.0%)

The results between receiving a text message alert or an email alert were answered close enough in percentage that BIDTC experts will not make any drastic changes to evaluating the ranked scores.

BIDTC did discover that the older generation tended to lean more to e-mail and phone calls while 56.3 percent of those that were 18-24 year olds preferred text messages.

For males 62.7 percent between the ages of 18-24 chose text messages. Other statistics included 44.3 percent of all people retirement age and older choosing e-mail over text messages and phone calls.

"While the results seem to be somewhat obvious to many," CMS Isaac Ericksen said. "We couldn't determine without the voice of consumers what best notification features to highlight for BIDTC."

BIDTC will continue to do more surveys to determine the best course for informing consumers about identity theft and protection.
