Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/18/2014 -- Retail volume sales of cigarettes declined by 4% in 2013 to account for 17.9 billion sticks. The decline can be attributed to higher cigarette prices, a decrease in smoking prevalence and the success of anti-smoking advertising campaigns. Volume sales were also affected by an evident shift to RYO tobacco, due to the lower unit prices in this category. In fact, RYO tobacco was the only category to record an increase in retail volume sales in 2013.

Competitive Landscape

Australian cigarettes is highly consolidated and continues to be dominated by three multinational players: British American Tobacco Australia, Philip Morris (Australia) and Imperial Tobacco Australia. In retail volume terms, other companies represented just 1% of sales in 2013.

Industry Prospects

Retail value sales of cigarettes are expected to decline at a CAGR of -2% (at constant 2013 prices) over the forecast period as smoking prevalence in Australia continues to decrease. Volume sales of cigarettes are also forecast to decline over this period at a CAGR of -9%. This can be linked to a decline in the smoking population, anti-smoking campaigns, the rising costs of cigarettes and a growing trend towards health and wellness.
