Specular Microscope Now Available in Boardman, OH

Dr. Jeff Hirschl of Boardman Family Eye Care in Boardman, Ohio, is always on the cutting edge of technology. Recently, Dr. Hirschl acquired a specular microscope which he uses to diagnose corneal disease in its very early stages.

Boardman, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/07/2014 -- Specular microscopy is a noninvasive, photographic technique that allows for the analysis and visualization of the corneal endothelium. The corneal endothelium is a single layer of cells on the inner surface of the cornea. This layer of cells faces the chamber formed between the cornea and the iris, the colored part of your eye. This layer of cells is highly specialized, and controls the fluid around the cornea to keep it in a slightly dehydrated state that is required for it to be transparent.

Dr Hirschl is one of the only optometrists in Ohio that precisely analyzes the cornea using a specular microscope, checking for signs of degradation of the cornea cells that lead to common eye problems such as glaucoma, uveitis and Fuchs endothelial dystrophy which can produce changes that can result in corneal edema and visual impairment.

Did you know that overuse of daily disposables can result in damage to the cornea, eye disease and visual impairment? Using specular microscopy, Dr Hirschl can analyze your cornea for damage and prescribe the right course of action that can keep your eyes healthy and you seeing and looking your best.
