Substance Abuse Treatment Center Offering $1K Scholarship

Alpine, UT -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/17/2016 -- Alpine Recovery Lodge is offering a $1,000 scholarship twice a year to help college students who have been affected by substance abuse.

"The high cost of college and the high cost of dealing with addiction are the two driving reasons behind the scholarship", said Amy Rothermel, Financial Director for Alpine Recovery.

"College is expensive. The average cost of one year of school with instate tuition is more than $9,000 a year," she said. "That doesn't include the cost of books, computers and other supplies a student often has buy. These scholarships are one way we're giving back to communities."

The scholarship is awarded twice a year. The summer deadline is July 1st. The winter deadline is Nov. 1. Winners will be notified July 31 and Nov. 30. Students from Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada are eligible.

One of the application requirements is an essay about how addiction has affected the student.

"You don't have to be a recovering addict yourself. Someone in your family could be the addict. Write about that. We want to read about how an addiction in yourself or someone close to you has touched you," Ms. Rothermel said. "Substance abuse hurts more than just the person who becomes addicted. It has a widespread and lasting effect on family and friends so our goal here is to reach out to not only the addicts themselves, but to expand this to all of those effected in some way."

Financial need is also used to decide which student will receive the scholarship.

Essays may be used by Alpine Recovery to talk about how addiction affects individuals and families.

"We want to use the stories to inspire other people to seek help and overcome their own addictions," Ms. Rothermel said.
